This game takes the level of quality seen in Sony’s other first-party titles like The Last of Us or God of War and grafts it onto the platforming genre. It goes toe-to-toe with some of the greats of gaming and proves it deserves to be in the same conversation. The player can then take the bots collected back to a hub world of sorts known as the Crash Site. There they are given the chance to spend their hard-earned in-game currency on collectible set pieces for each of these gaming icons. The level players will encounter the Mouse power-up in should send them into glee.
Astro Bot is technically the fifth entry in the Astro universe, though it’s the series’ first fully fledged — and fully priced — installment. Astro Bot takes ideas from these earlier titles and compiles them into a focused 3D platformer with dozens of main worlds, a bevy of additional unlockable planets and a wide range of satisfying mechanics. On top of this, the robot protagonists are super cute in every situation. The fact that some of the characters and settings in Astro Bot are recognizable from popular video games only makes the whole thing sweeter. Astro Bot is rolling back the years, not only shining a light on 30 years of PlayStation history through a ton of cameos and level design tributes, but by putting platformers back at gaming’s pinnacle.
The bird costs 200 coins, so players have to give up some gacha pulls to use it, but it’s a great way to keep players from getting stuck. Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a 2018 virtual reality platform game developed and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4’s PlayStation VR headset. Members of Team ASOBI discuss what it takes to make a platformer feel good. Watch Episode 1, and continue the Astro journey with the 5-episode behind the scenes series. These powers give ASTRO weird and wonderful ways to explore planets and battle his enemies. With your new powers, battle out a whole new roster of quirky baddies and huge bosses.
The basic movement of our little robot pal is great, with his jump, double jump, and hover hitting that sweet spot between floaty and finely tuned. But it’s the temporary abilities that come with each level that make things truly exciting. The Twin Frog gloves are a particular favourite, with their sticky tongues flinging out to provide a grapple swing option.
However, some long-time players of platformers produced by Sony will be disappointed in Astro Bot’s current endgame offerings. Besides many of Astro Bot’s creative and exciting boss battles, nostalgia fuels much of Astro Bot’s most thrilling moments, especially with the few stages specifically themed after PlayStation’s most beloved properties. However, those experiences risk feeling hollow for those who haven’t played the games that Astro Bot seems desperate to reference.

Buying at Full Price for £55 to support more of these kind of games. The fact that it is rated so high for the limited type of game that it is, just tells me that the review scores are unreliable and steers me away from it because it is scored so high. For reference, Baldurs Gate 3 was also given a 10 by Push Square, and there is literally no way this game is of the same calibre of a game that is the best RPG in living memory.
A fantastically colourful and creative romp through a huge variety of settings, it’ll have your thumbsticks clicking, your heart racing, and even your lips blowing – yep, that’s a mechanic in the game. Each level across five main galaxies and one unlockable one features a swarm of bots (many based on beloved PS characters) to rescue, as well as jigsaw pieces and some secret black holes too. Here, you’ll find your one-stop shop for every single collectible in the game, and the Trophies too, arranged into each zone Astro blasts off into. As players explore each level, there are several collectibles for them to find. These come in the form of finding Astro’s fellow Bots (who are sometimes dressed up as famous and forgotten PlayStation characters) and puzzle pieces in each stage.
On the flipside, speedrunners should enjoy Astro Bot as well, since it offers planets of platforming challenges with incredibly responsive controls. VR Bots make their return in the next title of the series, The Playroom VR. They appear in a much larger capacity in this game compared to the previous entry.
Astro Bot Is The Playstation Game Everyone Needs To Play
The Playroom was comprised of a collection of mini games intended to demonstrate the PlayStation camera and DualShock 4. Although at the time, the bot we would one day be gushing over, looked slightly different. In the demo, a hoard of intentionally simple-looking designed bots would swarm and interact with the player in a very, “Gru commanding an army of Minions” kind a way. Astro Bot is filled to the brim with Easter Eggs, but there are also some secrets to find and special unlockables to earn for finding bots and puzzle pieces. Here’s what you can earn by collecting Astro Bot’s many collectibles, and the many, many easter eggs to look out for.

As for the is-it-fun thing, Astro Bot’s solution is even more winning. But what I really love about Astro Bot is that it’s also just filled with bits and pieces. Stuff to roll around in, stuff that forms little piles that can be kicked about.
There are some levels in here that almost had me pulling my hair out (in the best sort of way). But regardless of the difficulty scale, you feel so cool when you figure out the latest mechanics or platforming puzzle. It’s structured in a way too where if you want to dig into the difficult stuff you can, but if you want to keep things simple with the main campaign, you can also do that.
The game is very streamline I would have thought no way I am missing this stuff lol. Astro Bot has a full set of PS5 Trophies for you to collect as you make your way through the game. [newline]As part of our Astro Bot guide, we’ve got a page dedicated to helping you earn every Trophy, including the coveted Platinum. In addition to new levels, Sony as part of its June State of Play announced a new limited-edition Astro Bot DualSense controller, one with a slightly different expression from a previous Astro Bot controller.
