At the second Checkpoint, look left to spot a giant white robot with a rock club, and a Bot with a sword and tunic on a tiny pinnacle in front of him. This references 2005’s Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 by Team Ico. In 2018, the game received a PS4 remake by Bluepoint Studios. At the start of GPU Jungle, check along the left-hand side between two trees for a lower section with four Bots with various weapons on their backs huddled around a campfire. This is a reference to 2002’s Monster Hunter on PS2, developed by Capcom. The use of PSPs however refers to an expanded 2006 PSP port, Monster Hunter Freedom, which was even more popular than the original.

Astro’s Playroom

In terms of basic structure and mechanics, Astro’s Playroom is not surprising; it adheres closely to a comfortable formula. But that familiarity doesn’t drag the experience down, because the DualSense controller adds novelty in fun and surprising ways. In ASTRO’S PLAYROOM, players guide Astro through a series of lands, all of which tout the selling points of the PlayStation 5, including its SSD hard drive and new processor. This makes for a themed series of levels (four levels per land) that showcase the DualSense controller, primarily its rumble feature. You’ll feel the ice shattering beneath Astro’s feet via the controller. It underscores how much the controller can be a part of the game.

Ps5’s Dualsense Could Be A Game-changer If Developers Use It Well

In the first mud pit in Gusty Gateway, look in the right-hand corner for a skeleton swinging a sword around with a distinctive shield. The shield reveals that this is a reference to 1998’s MediEvil on PS1 by SCE Cambridge, about the knight Sir Daniel Fortesque being brought back to life so he can live up to his own falsified legacy. Holding the square for a long while will charge a special rotating attack.

During the side-path to the PSone LCD Monitor, you’ll find a Bot in samurai attire next to a tree. F168 refers to Jin Sakai and the tree in his childhood home, as seen in 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, developed by Sucker Punch. Ghost of Tsushima was the last first-party PlayStation game developed exclusively for the PS4, after which the PS5 released. This references 2009’s Flower on PS3, made by thatgamecompany. Jump onto the thin ledge behind the tree and head left to the Everybody’s Golf VR easter egg. From here you can jump back down to cloud blowing the rotating platform, with the Piposaru container nearby.

The list goes on, and while some mechanics feel like gimmicks (steering with motion controls will never be fun), the majority of them are cool. Even more than that, they make a substantial difference in your connection to the action, conveying an amazing tactile sense of the world. In the game, you control your little character as he jumps, dodges and explores his way around the levels.

If you have only unlocked one or two in Astro’s Playroom, they will appear here individually, meaning you can return and get the rest when you are ready. Use your powered-up punch (hold the Square button) on the tree to drop the bananas. The main character Ash uses a paint brush that can bring his creations to life. Astro’s Playroom is also, surprisingly, a true love letter to PlayStation history. Some are more obvious — like a robot with a bandana that pops out of a cardboard box — while others are more subtle deep cuts to the retro library (like 1995’s Jumping Flash!). It doesn’t stop at the collectibles; some bots pay tribute to past icons.

PlayStation made a name for itself with exclusive titles, and titles like Helldivers 2 and Returnal show off the PS5’s tech. This is also true for the sounds that come from the DualSense. Such as Astro’s feet grating against the ice while he skates, the wind blowing in Memory Meadows or the coin collection sound effect. This references 2001’s Devil May Cry on PS2, developed by Capcom Production Studio 4. This scene depicts protagonist Dante keeping a Marionette enemy in the air by constantly shooting at him, showcasing the franchise’s famous juggling mechanic. Also right after the third Hang Glider use, look for a lower area to jump down to near the ramp with the Wires sticking out. Here you’ll see a Bot with a triangular object on its head pulling a hapless victim. This is Pyramid Head from 2001’s Silent Hill 2 on PS2, developed by Team Silen in Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. Pyramid Head is a manifestation of the protagonist James Sunderland’s guilt and want for punishment.

If you’re having trouble getting those new messages to pop up, you might try waiting until you’ve completed the relatively short game’s main campaign. We had trouble getting the message to appear on a new save file but saw it immediately upon entering a completed one.
