Every Astro Bot Ability
I could go on and on about every unique level, but the wonder of Astro Bot lies in discovery itself. That’s why Astro Bot feels as consequential as it does even if it just looks like your average 3D platformer full of collectibles and clever power-ups at a glance. The expertly designed PS5 exclusive plays like an intervention with its own publisher. It brings the PlayStation platform on an intergalactic journey through its history to rediscover its long lost sense of wonder. It’s not just a very effective ad for Sony; it’s an exuberant adventure that remembers that there’s power in play. At one time, this was a fundamental video game experience; a 3D platformer was just about the coolest game you could have.
It came pre-installed on the PlayStation 5 when it went on sale in 2020. It was easily one of the best games available on the system at launch. To this day, its creative use of the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers showcase what the controller can do better than pretty much any other game. Plenty of stages require patience, awareness and a high degree of platforming skill, though resets are generous and failure doesn’t cost anything other than your time. Completionists will have a great time with this one — there are so many secret passages and hidden bots to find, most of them cleverly tucked away and easily missed unless you’re actively looking for them.

Astro’s Playroom would launch in 2020 pre-installed on every PS5, and once again served as a tech demo for the studio’s latest controller. Then, in 2024, players were treated to the full-length critically acclaimed platformer Astro Bot. As galaxies are explored and Bots are rescued, Astro Bot’s hub world stations begin to unlock, including a closet with outfits for Astro and a claw machine that gives players a place to spend all their collected coins. The machine dispenses new Astro costumes, cosmetic options for the PS5 controller spaceship, and joy for the rescued PS-themed Bots. Each is missing a beloved item that can, once regained, give them a clever new animation to perform in the hub world.
Lost Galaxy (55 Bots & 22 Puzzle Pieces)
Everyone should be able to play this masterpiece, but maybe the PS5 should actually get more games to play. Special Bots can be found as you progress through Astro Bot, each one dressed as a character from PlayStation’s long history. There are hundreds of them to collect, appearing in each level of the game. As part of our Astro Bot guide, we’re going to reveal all Special Bots, who they are, and where to find them. To start the year on a good note, we are delighted to announce new Astro Bot content is coming starting today.
Astro Bot levels challenge players to collect all the stranded bots, but there are other things players will want to keep an eye out for as well, like coins and puzzle pieces. Everything players collect goes to Astro Bot’s hub world, the Crash Site. Here, hundreds of rescued bots congregate and can be used within the hub to rescue even more bots. Puzzle pieces are used to create images of objects that then become additional buildings for players to interact with in the hub world. The first one players build is the gacha machine that they will remember from Astro’s Playroom, and that’s where the majority of one’s coins will be spent as well.
Plus, you’ll make a ton going to new and even older levels from exploring, destroying enemies, and collecting coins and old character and Puzzle Pieces. In tandem with expert level design are the game’s diverse and exciting mechanics. At the start of nearly every level, Astro jumps into a suit or straps on a backpack of some kind that gives them a new ability.
For example, the Joel Bot from The Last of Us is said to have a habit of “[telling] the occasional white lie,” in reference to his highly questionable personal choices. Little nods like that will make any longtime gaming fan smile. Astro Bot follows the tiny but brave Astro as his PS5 mothership is attacked by his galactic nemesis, scattering the crew throughout space. Only Astro can set things right, and he needs your help to rescue the stranded crew and rebuild the mothership on his biggest mission yet.
